Equality Act, Religious Expression & Philosophical Beliefs

The Equality Act 2010 outlaws discrimination on the ground of religion or belief. Whilst this may sound theoretically straightforward, it can sometimes be more complicated in practice. When it comes to the workplace, or access to goods and services, there has been some confusion about the extent to which people can go in pursuing their rights to follow their beliefs.

This workshop revisits the legislation and guidance and provides time for participants to explore and discuss the complexities and nuances of real-life case studies and realistic practice examples.

What do we cover?

  • The legal framework – refresher/summary of Equality Act with regards to religion & philosophical belief
  • Religion & belief systems – definitions and distinctions
  • Examples of direct and indirect discrimination
  • Case studies – examples of where the law was challenged
  • Practice examples – small group work & discussion based on realistic scenarios
  • This session is delivered on zoom to allow for easy break-out groups and small group discussions
  • A participant’s pack is provided following the session
