We think that the opposite is true!

NOT learning in the workplace is much more scary! It is in our nature to evolve and change as human beings and so it is natural to strive to continually develop our talents and skills and be challenged and stimulated.

Research shows that increased employee engagement and talent retention as well as higher levels of motivation and productivity are linked to both an organisation’s investment in people and the efficacy of leadership.

We love to talk about the importance of communication here at Cerulean Towers, and so we will do so again! Managers have to provide a strong, strategic narrative about the organisation’s journey and mission – the values that an organisation states as its own must be demonstrated and lived, not just published in the literature and stuck on the walls.

People should be given opportunities to learn, both through access to relevant learning and development training but also through every day, on-the-job coaching and development – this can be partly manager-led but is also about creating an environment where sharing knowledge and learning between colleagues and across hierarchies is encouraged – we don’t like silos, they can be lonely places!

Truly enlightened companies also are realising that providing their people with opportunities to learn outside the immediate requirements of their role can go a long way to increase overall employee engagement and motivation; whilst we are not suggesting you suddenly blow your entire staff training budget on a cake-making course for your accountancy business, it is something to consider when looking at your employees’ happiness.

We think Richard Branson put it rather succinctly in the following:

“Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.”

So don’t be scared of learning in the workplace – embrace new challenges and seek new opportunities and share knowledge.

Oh and of course as it’s nearly Halloween we have to leave you with some jokes to make you groan…

Q. Why was there thunder and lightning in the lab?

A. The scientists were brainstorming.

Q. What do you do with a green monster?

A. Wait until it ripens.

Thanks for reading and Happy Halloween!
